Can anyone recommend a small pet store/adoption center in the Salt Lake City area?

Hana asked:

We’re trying to find a good home for one of our basset hounds - they aren’t getting along, so we have to find a new home for one of them. We would hate to send either of them to an animal shelter, as one of them is an older dog (one is going on 13, and the other is around 3 or 4 according to my bother, but she might be a bit older), so we’ve been trying to find someone who would take one of them, but we haven’t had much luck, so we’re going to our next option: small pet stores or adoption centers (and I say small because I’ve always had better luck finding really good homes for animals through the small ones) Can anyone recommend someplace that would be able to help us find a really good home for one of the dogs?

Heaven’s Gate is an animal sanctuary (it’s not a shelter because they don’t put animals down). I think they are in Morgan. Have you put an ad in the paper? Alot of senior citizens want companion dogs, but they don’t want to deal with the puppy phase. I would love to take it if I could, but Davis County has a limit on the number of pets you can have. Good luck.

Put ads in some of the smaller shelters. Go to small towns. Spanish fork has a shelter that gets a lot of action. Just put a poster there and see if you get any hits. If not, go further south. People in the smaller towns have a harder time finding breeds like that. Make sure to interview potential owners though. Make sure your dog will have a good home.

It is always sad when dogs don’t get along.

Are your dogs are purebred and purchased from a breeder? If so you probably signed a legal contract that gives the breeder the first right to the dog if you are unable to keep it and that they also have a right to say if your dog can be put up for adoption. Responsible breeders have this clause because they truely care and want the best for all their dogs. They have committed that in the event that a dog cannot stay with it’s current owners, that they will accept the dog back and assess it and try to find a suitable home.

If not, go online and do a search on Basset Rescue. This will help find an organization specializing in your breed that will place the dog in a foster home and ultimately find a suitable permanant home.

    Best Wishes.
