How can I adopt a greyhound without going through all the hassles and huge adoption fees?

jimmyspreitzer asked:

I’ve been wanting one for a while, every time I check out an adoption site there are rediculous protocols like home-visits and 300 dollar adoption fees. I really want one of these dogs because I’ve heard they are good for people with allergies and from what I’ve read they seem to make awesome pets. Any help would be appreciated.

Google the Greyhound rescue groups in your area

Like the other guy said, Rescue. there are hundreds or thousands of animal shelters across the country that have a dog that needs some love. I know here in Phoenix that there are rescue clubs for basically any breed that you can think of.

The “hassles” and fees are there for a reason - they want to make sure that the person getting the dog is the right owner for this dog. It’s also how they weed out the lazy people form those really serious about getting a dog. Any good shelter will screen homes instead of just handing a dog over to just anyone.

PS - why do you not want to go through the hassles and fees? You DO have the money to care for a dog right? ANd the right home? Is there something you are worried about…?

Those “ridiculous protocols” are to ensure that no greyhounds get rehomed with the wrong person, and if you don’t understand that/can’t be bothered then frankly you are the wrong person!

The adoption fees are nessecary to stop the rescue centre from going bankrupt. It basically pays for all the vet care/food etc the dog has recieved while with them. Check with retired greyhound rescues and other centres in your area - some may only have optional donations to get a dog, in which case you can screw them over and take it for free, but you will probably still have to go through the formal process.

We adopted a rescue greyhound and she was one of the best dogs I have ever had. They didn’t do the home visit, but they knew that I was a trainer, so maybe that was why. They did make us wait for a week before actually getting her. They let us get all of stuff that we needed for her and give us time to think if we really wanted to go through with it. I think all of the rescue groups should do that. The protocols are there to protect their rescue dogs and I am all for them.

The greyhound does shed alot, so don’t think they will not do any of that. They are not off the leash type of dogs unless they are at a fenced in dog park. You have to watch your front door opening. I taught mine door boundaries. They are non profit and they need the adoption fees for spay/neuter, medical care, vaccinations, etc. This does not come cheap for them. I am all for the home-visits also.

    Try

Its a search engine for animal shelters across the country and is updated regularly. You can search by breed, zip code, etc. Only fees you pay are the typical adoption fees from the specific shelters. If there is a fee out of the norm, it’ll say so in the description of the animal. Good luck! Greyhounds are awesome pets - a good friend of mine has two.

the hassles are only there for the safety of the animal. and the fees in rescue places usually are there to help pay for shots, past medical expenses and help to keep the place running. petfinder.com has some really good animals from local shelters.

There’s a reason for the home visits and adoption applications- it’s so the dog goes to a good home especially greyhounds after their racing careers. The fees cover transportation, veterinary checks, and other expenses. If you do not have the time or money for this then it seems like you need to wait a little more and understand the process and why they have it.
