on craigslist in the pet section ppl always post an adoption fee. How much is a good adoption fee for?

it’s a girl! asked:

8-10 week old kittens that have been fixed and fully vaccinated and dewormed?

my cat is due to have kittens at any time and I WILL have all these services done before they are adopted out. someone said $60 but i think that might be too much
PROUD- you can get a kitten fixed as long as they weigh 2 lbs. 8-10 weeks is usually the time they do this now.

its new and theyve only been doing it for a few years, but im a vet tech and its a normal thing to have done
HEIDI- i run an animal rescue and thats what i plan on getting done is getting the female cat fixed right afterwards, i took her from a woman who was gonna put her and her kittens down.

yeah, generally kittens won’t go for more than $25 unless they’re a fancy breed. Craigslisters frown on high rehoming fees.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but you cannot get a kitten neutered at only 8 to 10 weeks old….

$60 is a bit steep for just a regular ol’ kitten (meaning no specific breed or anything like that). People would rather go to a shelter and pay that and KNOW that they are rescuing a cat than to pay that amount to some stranger. Its highly likely you won’t get that much. Maybe $30 at the most.

First, I don’t know of any vet that would fix an 8 week old kitten. Most won’t do spay or neuter surgery on an animal until it is at least 4 months old. Also, you can do the first round or so of shots, but an animal is not FULLY vaccinated until up to the first “birthday” because there are certain vaccines vets won’t give until they are much older than 8- 10 weeks old. So, considering all of this, I would probably ask around $20- $25 per kitten and use the money to get your adult female cat fixed!!

The others are correct about the age thing. But to answer your question, an adoption fee is generally meant to accomplish two things. To recover your costs for the shots, surgery and any other expense you have put into the kittens. It’s also intended to insure that the person adopting it is serious enough about really wanting to give it a good home and not just trying to get their hands on free animals so they can turn around and sell them. There are still lots of experimental labs out there who want to get their hands on free animals. Some will pay a fee for them. You just want to be sure that the person who adopts your kittens will not turn around and get more from them from some cruel and unscrupulous person or business. My suggestion would be to add up what you spend on each kitten, then add maybe $5 or $10 because you have been feeding and caring for them. I hope that helps.

My vet told me I could get my cat fixed at 6 weeks!
I would suggest, for a rehoming fee, to charge what you paid for all the services you had done. You can go to spay and save or friends of animals, it will cost much less if you go through a sevice like that.
But I would just tally all the vet costs for the kittens and divide it by how many kittens you have.
I got a cat off free cycle, and even though they didnt ask for money up front, she told me that she paid for spaying, shots, microchipping and such. I told her if she could show me proof, i would compensate her for some of the costs. She did, and I gave her $50 for the cat. It may have been high to some people, but I’ve gotten kittens for free and ended up paying HUGE vet bills because they were never checked and had HUGE medical problems! One of my kittens i had to have dewormed 3 times!
If you dont get any hits with the fee you set, lower the fee. you may loose money, but at least the kittens will find homes!
    Good luck

Personally, I feel that anything over $20 is selling, not a rehoming fee. I’ll grant you that you have a lot of money into the kittens and it would be wonderful to get it back. I also agree that you probably can get the vet work done cheaper than the average person and $60 is much cheaper than what I’d have to pay for the same service… BUT… you are selling pets if you ask for that much money.
I do live in an area where free cats are easy to find, perhaps things are different where you live and $60 is reasonable.
I do think that any money changing hands is a sale. Sending home supplies with the animal that you ask payment for is another thing IMO.
