Adoption agency that I adopted dog from is withholding my pet from me?
AMBER L asked:
Two years ago I adopted a dog from a no-kill shelter. Last week, I had to leave town to visit my dying grand father, while under my dog-sitters care, they got out and were picked up by a woman. When she could not immediately reach me, she called the number on a tag that I keep on his collar with the adoption agency’s information. The founder came and picked up both dogs from the woman and will not return the dog that I adopted from her shelter. We have an adoption agreement, we have obided by all the clauses. My dogs are my family and they are very much loved. She is resorting to personal reasons on why not to return my dog and it is unfair. Can I obtain an attorney for this? And if so WHAT KIND? THe other dog was returned to me because I did not adopt her from them.. I do not want to seperate the dogs because they are very attached and they are companiions. Please help me!
Yes, I put my trust in someone to care for my dogs as I would, and unfortunately they were very irresponsible. Also, I was very limited in my choices as far who I could pick, as the person would also be staying in my home alone. I was up north off the grid, where there are no landlines or cellphone service, I had to leave town with no notice and had to ask somebody I felt I could trust and they broke that trust, I am very upset at the person, and have not spoken to them since. But what that person allowed to happen, does not speak of how i care for my dogs. The personal reasons have nothing to do with anything ont he contract, I did not violate one thing listed on the contract. The contract does state that a dog can be removed from a home if the contract is violated, but I absolutely did not violate one thing listed there. THe dogs were not under my care when this happened, had they been, I wouldnt be going through this now.
The dog was returned to yesterday! Thank you everybody for all of your help!

You can contact a lawyer that takes civil cases, this might fall under small claims court. If you have a contract with the adoption group I would read it over thoroughly
You don’t say what these “personal reasons” are.
You can get a lawyer. You may, or may not win, depending on what those “personal reasons” are.
You didn’t leave your dogs with a very good sitter and they could have been killed! She’s protecting the pooch from your poor judgment! Sorry
Take the contract to the police. Dogs are technically property. I would ask the police. They are stealing. Get your vet records that prove you took good care, statement from the dog sitter, and I doubt you would even need an attourney.
I hate stories like this - you sound like a great owner who was doing the best she could and got scr*wed by the system….ps. any “real” rescuer in a no-kill situation who isn’t crazy would give you back your dog….becuase there are so many dogs dying out there - in the grand scheme of things - her holding on this dog is allowing another someplace to be killed. The rescuer is letting dogs die effectively while she holds your ransom….shameful.
I’m not sure on this but if u didn’t break any of the terms of your adoption agreement you should be able to sue the adoption agency under civil suit since the adoption agreement is a legally binding agreement
yes, i would retain an attorney and take her to civil court, but only after reading your adoption contract.
Call the cops, the dogs are yours not hers. She is stealing your dog.
FIRST, you should read that contract over and over to make sure you’re not missing something…there could be some rule that says if the dog ever ends up back in the shelter they will not return it to the owner. I’m sure you understand why they would do that. Anyway, if you are absolutely sure that there is no such rule, then that woman is breaking the law, and her personal reasons mean NOTHING. Go to the police and tell them what is going on. The dog is you property and she is stealing. I agree that you need to take vet records to the police also. Just make sure there’s nothing in the contract about this, otherwise you will look like an idiot
I don’t see any need to hire a lawyer, I would think the police could take care of this.
Yup, it’s theft unless there is something in the contract that states the woman keeping your dogs is within her rights. Go to the police with all the information and report it. If you are correct and you havne’t broken the contract, the police will put go over and pick up your dogs for you.
I would most def read your contract over really well. I used to foster for an organization who’s contract states they can pull the animal at any time for any reason!
If it dose not state this, i would try everything in your power to get the dog back. Sorry you are having so much troubles at such a bad time: (
Don’t bother with the expense of a lawyer - contact your local paper instead.
You have provided a home for this dog for two years and through no fault of your own your dogs got out. How dare this person take your dog under those circumstances!!
Honestly some of these rescue people have no grip on reality.
DNA paternity testing…
The short answer to this question is Yes! And it is all about strategy, and preparation for your child custody court case. You need to know what the court is going to be looking for in facts, and this is one of the reasons that parents are put through …
